JANUARY 2020 NEWSLETTER

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hello! My name is Sue, and I’m addicted to “stuff”. I’ve never been one to make resolutions, but this year, I’ve resolved to get rid of some “stuff”.

I’ve watched the Marie Kondo organizing series on Netflix, and although I’m not ready to pile all of my clothing on my bed and say “thank you” to the rejects, I am ready to decide which members of my teetering stack of t-shirts can be donated so that I can close my bureau drawer a little easier. I’m ready to tackle the junk drawer and maybe, just maybe weed out a couple of spatulas.

Why do we collect so much stuff? Why are we willing to park high dollar vehicles in the driveway because the garage is full of stuff? Why do we pay as much or more per square foot to rent a storage unit for stuff than we do for homes for our families?

I’ve always said that the more stuff you own, the more stuff owns you. Usually, I’ve been referring to why I don’t want to own a big item like a boat or RV – once you own one you have to maintain it, etc. Now I’m beginning to see that it applies to the small stuff too. I love my cast iron pan, but it requires much more care than the non-stick one. Can I bear to part with either – NO! I NEED both (along with the matching pots in both sets of course)! What about that copper-bottom cookware that has to be polished? I don’t use it, but it sure looks pretty hanging up.

I am going to raise my right hand and freely admit that I have an emotional attachment to things. I am ready to learn how to let go of unnecessary stuff taking up space and creating stress rather than “sparking joy” as the Kondo mantra goes. Hopefully our January speaker will have some good ideas about how to achieve success in simplicity and organization. Will I be successful? We shall see… um I have until December 31st to fulfill that resolution, right?

Here’s hoping 2020 is a very good year!
